My body feels like a stranger

If your body doesn’t feel like your own right now
Your body has done something enormous—and now you’re living with the after. Maybe your clothes fit differently, your scars or stretch marks are new, your muscles feel weaker, or your energy is all over the place. You might look in the mirror and feel like you’re meeting a new version of yourself that you didn’t ask for.
It’s okay if you don’t feel at home in your body right now. It’s okay if you miss how you used to look or move. It’s also okay if you’re impressed by what your body did and still feel sad about the changes. Those feelings can sit side by side.

A tiny help: talking to your body like a friend
For now, instead of jumping to “fixing” mode, try a gentler approach:
Notice one thing your body did for you today—kept you walking, held your baby, laughed, cried, healed, fed someone, or simply made it through the day.
When a harsh thought shows up (“I hate how I look”), try adding one kinder sentence right after it: “I hear you. This is hard. My body has been through a lot and is still on my side.”
Choose clothes that fit the body you have today—soft waistbands, forgiving fabrics—so you’re not fighting your closet every morning.
You don’t have to love your body right now to treat it with basic kindness.
A reminder you’re not alone
Many mothers talk about feeling surprised by how long it takes to feel “normal” in their bodies again—physically, emotionally, and mentally. You’re not broken for needing time. You’re healing from something big.
You’re allowed to take pictures, avoid pictures, wear sweats, dress up, or anything in between. There’s no right way to move through this. There’s just your way.
Here’s what I would do: gentle on both of you
Clothes won’t solve everything, but they can make daily life feel softer.
This week’s picks:
Ultra‑soft baby outfits that feel good against your healing body when you hold them.
Easy‑on pieces that don’t require wrestling tiny limbs while you’re sore or tired.
If you carry anything for moms: comfy items you’d actually want to wear at home and on quick outings.
You can see the “gentle on both of us” selection here.
Your body is not just what it looks like in the mirror. It’s the home you’re living in while you love and care for this little person. That deserves patience, even on the days you don’t feel very patient.
