When everyone has advice about sleep

To the mom caught between 10 different sleep opinions

One of the most exhausting parts of newborn sleep is not just the waking—it’s the constant stream of advice about it.

“Never let the baby sleep on you.”“Always let the baby sleep on you.”“Wake them up to feed.”“Never wake a sleeping baby.”

You could ask five people the same question and get ten answers. It’s no wonder your head spins every time someone brings up sleep, and you start to feel like there’s a secret right answer that you somehow keep missing.

Here’s what I want you to hear: there is no one perfect way that works for every baby. There is only the way that works well enough for your baby and your family in this particular season.

Push the snooze button on all that advice. You know you and your baby.

A tiny help for sorting through the noise

When you feel overwhelmed by advice, try this simple filter:

  • Does this advice respect my baby’s temperament and needs?

  • Does it respect my mental health and limits?

  • Does it seem safe and in line with what my pediatrician recommends?

If it fails those questions, you’re allowed to set it down. You are not required to try every method, every schedule, every trick you see online.

You can also choose one or two trusted sources (a pediatrician, a reliable website, a friend whose values feel similar to yours) and let their voices matter more than strangers’ opinions. Your job is not to audition every idea; it’s to care for your baby and yourself with the information you have and agree with.

A reminder that you’re not alone

Every newborn mom ends up caught between “you’re spoiling them” and “soak up every moment.” It’s confusing, because both messages are loud and emotional.

It’s okay to change your mind. It’s okay to try something for a few nights and decide it doesn’t feel good for you. Flexibility is not failure; it’s learning. You are allowed to grow and adjust as you go. It’s what your baby will do, and you wouldn’t question them for trying.

You are the one who sees your baby at 2 a.m., 4 a.m., and 6 a.m. That makes you the expert on this baby, even if you still feel unsure.

Here’s what I would do: giving you one less thing to worry about

You can’t control every opinion about sleep, but you can make some decisions that feel peaceful and easy.

This week’s “no‑second‑guessing” picks:

  • Soft, safe sleepwear in easy‑to‑choose fabrics – So you’re not worrying if baby is comfortable against their skin.

  • Season‑appropriate layers – To help with “are they too hot / too cold?” without needing ten outfit changes.

  • Simple, mix‑and‑match sets – So you can reach into the drawer half‑asleep and know whatever you grab will work.

You can see what we consider to be “Night Shift Essentials” here.

If the advice feels loud and your own voice feels small, I hope this can be your quiet reminder: you are allowed to trust yourself. You are learning your baby in real time, and that counts for more than any perfect plan.

There is no one perfect way that works for every baby. There is only the way that works well enough for your baby and your family.
