You’re still you (even if you feel different now)

For the mom who wonders if she’ll ever feel like herself again

You might look at your days now—feeds, naps, diapers, laundry, trying to remember if you brushed your teeth—and wonder, “Where did I go?” It can feel like your whole identity has been replaced with “mom,” full‑time.

You haven’t disappeared. Parts of you are resting, parts are on pause, and parts are being reshaped by this huge thing you’re doing. It’s disorienting, but it’s not permanent. You are still in there.

You are still in there

A tiny help: tiny rituals that belong to you

You don’t need hours of “me time” to start reconnecting with yourself. You just need small rituals that say, “I am a person, too.”

  • Choose one 5–10 minute daily ritual that’s just for you: a shower where you actually enjoy the water, a favorite drink you savor sitting down, a short stretch, a page of a book, a walk to the mailbox alone.

  • When you do it, name it in your mind: “This is my moment.” That small act of noticing matters.

  • Keep a simple list in your notes app of things that make you feel like yourself (music, scents, places, activities), and gently weave them back in, one at a time, when you can.

You don’t have to “get back to who you were” right away—or ever. You’re allowed to become someone new, with threads of the old you woven through.

A reminder you’re not alone

Many mothers describe the newborn months as losing themselves and slowly finding a new version, piece by piece. You’re not the only one standing between “before” and “after,” wondering what the final picture will look like.

You won’t always be this tired. You won’t always be this consumed by the basics. As your baby grows, space will slowly open up again—and you’ll bring new strength and softness into that space.

Here’s what I would do: little joy sparks

Sometimes seeing your baby in something you chose—the way you like—can be a reminder that your taste and personality are still here.

This week’s go to's:

  • Prints, colors, or styles that feel like “if my personality were baby clothes.”

  • A “this is our thing” outfit you always put on for small traditions (Saturday pancakes, evening walks, etc.).

  • Soft, cozy pieces that invite you to slow down and enjoy one tiny moment in a long day.

  • There are also small bite books that help, like You Got This: A Guide to Maternal Health. Your baby needs you well, just like you need them well.

You can see the joy‑spark pieces here and here.

You are not “just a mom” now. You are still you, adding “mom” to everything you already were—and everything you’re still becoming. That’s big, brave work, and you are in the middle of it.
